Focus and Scope

This journal’s purpose is to make original, media-specific contributions to the field of comics scholarship and to advance the appreciation of comic art.

Our research is inspired by, but not limited to, the following questions:

  • How are form and format interconnected in comics?
  • What is the meaning of “content”?
  • How are page sizes related to what is contained in them?
  • How do different technologies affect the processes of creating and reading a comics page?
  • How do different panel arrangements work?
  • What is the media-specificity of a comics page?
  • What are some of the different possible ways of reading comics pages?

Peer Review Process

All research submitted to The Comics Grid are initially assessed by an Editor, who decides whether or not the article is suitable for peer review. Submissions considered suitable for peer review are assigned to one or more independent experts, who assess the article for clarity, validity, and sound methodology.

All research articles submitted for peer review are handled within an open review system by external experts. The journal strives to make the peer review process as open as possible, and the editors encourage two-way dialog during the review process. Authors can expect to know who is reviewing their submission, and see a full disclosure of the comments provided by the reviewer to editors.

We work hard to make this process as fast and efficient as possible. We also ask our reviewers to provide formative feedback, even if an article is not deemed suitable for the journal.

Publication Frequency

The journal publishes on a continual basis, with new articles coming online as soon as they have passed peer review and been copyedited and typeset. There are no formal submission deadlines for regular issues.
