Call for Expressions of Interest: Editorial Positions

The editors of The Comics Grid: Journal of Comics Scholarship seek expressions of interest to join our editorial team in the following volunteer positions:

·  Editorial and Peer Review Workflow Coordinator(s)

·  Social Media Editor(s)

The appointed candidates will work closely with the journal's editors.  Expressions of interest of up to 300 words with accompanying CVs should be sent to comicsgrid@gmail.com by March 1, 2021. Interviews are likely to take place over the month of March via video-conferencing software.

Candidates can be located anywhere in the world but the journal leadership meets during GMT or CET business hours.

These administrative positions require some prior experience of editorial work, peer review, and/or academic writing and communications, including social media and online collaboration tools. 

Role Specifications

Apart from an interest in comics studies, the specific desirable experience for both roles is listed below.  

 Editorial and Peer Review Workflow Coordinator(s)  

·  Some experience, as editor, author or reviewer, with at least one editorial or academic journal/ conference / peer review management software (such as Open Journal Systems, ConfTool, ScholarOne etc.).

·  Previous experience or knowledge of the academic/scholarly peer-review process.

·  Excellent written English and awareness of online etiquette and inclusive language. Fluency in other languages is always a plus.

·  Experience with Excel, Google Drive, Docs and other Google apps.

·  Experience with Trello or similar.

·  Flexibility to attend online meetings that may need to be weekly, bi-weekly or monthly during term times (this may vary depending on time of the year, number of submissions, team availability, etc).

 Social Media Editor(s)

 ·    A passion for engaging diverse audiences online in a frictionless manner. Creativity and willingness to innovate. Previous experience tweeting professionally and personally from more than one account.

·  Excellent written English and awareness of social media public and academic trends, online etiquette, and inclusive language.

·  Ability to read at least one other language.

·   Expert use of TweetDeck as account / community manager- experience monitoring accounts, scheduling tweets, and curating content.

·   Previous experience with Gmail, Google Drive (Google Docs, Forms, Sheets), Google Scholar and/or Google Alerts; experience searching for scholarly literature.

·  Experience with Mailchimp or similar newsletter software.

·   Experience with Mendeley and/or Zotero.

·   Experience setting up Zoom events.

·   Experience publishing content on YouTube, Facebook pages/groups, LinkedIn, and other major academic and general public online platforms.

·  Experience with Twitter Analytics.

·  Awareness or experience of Humanities Commons, CORE, OSF, socarxiv, figshare, or other similar platforms or repositories.

Further Information

Scholarly publishing can be a career path for academics, so we encourage expressions of interest from PhD level Postgraduate Researchers and Early Career Academics with broad  interests and a passion for open-access, researcher-led scholarly communications.

Candidates with other credentials are welcome to apply if they have the required experience and/or willingness to learn the journal’s tools and processes. The most important skills for these positions are social rather than technical: the successful candidates must be able to work well with others and be tactful online as all work will be conducted remotely.

Hiring more than one position per role to reduce workload is possible. Two positions per role in different time zones would be ideal. These roles offer an opportunity to help shape new directions for the journal.

About the Journal

The Comics Grid: Journal of Comics Scholarship is a researcher-led, open-access, peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to comics scholarship. Our publisher is the Open Library of Humanities.

The journal publishes continually, with new articles coming online as soon as they have passed peer review, been copyedited and typeset. Our approach to review and editing is collaborative and open. The articles published within a calendar year comprise one issue of the journal, in addition to Special Collections that have their own publication timeframes. We also organise and host a periodical webinar series, and seek to expand and strengthen the existing networks of comics scholars, academics from different disciplines and members of the public interested in comics. 

The journal's current editors are Drs Kathleen Dunley, Ernesto Priego, and Peter Wilkins. The journal has an editorial board and an editorial advisory board. This call for expressions of interest to join the editorial team is part of a strategy to revise our editorial workflow and engagement management.
